Isabella Island - Galapagos Ecuador
Hike on a Volcano

From the end of the road, you hike about 1,000 feet up to the rim of Volcan Sierra Negra. This volcano is about a million years old and like most here, a crater formed as the center collapsed. 5 years ago a new lava flow filled in the crater with 10 meters of fresh black lava. A steam vent is still visible in the distance.

Off the side of the crater rim are lava flows. The brown lava here is about 1,000 years old.

Lava Tubes and other formations are common

A large lava flow occured in 1973 - the black lava on the right is the fresh stuff

Several vents are active and the moisture supports new plant life already

From this peak we could see across to the other side of the Island
